Welcome to MOUNT SAN JACINTO STATE PARK

fallen tree cut right through to clear the way for the trail

Oh yeah, there are Mountain Lions here ...

Massive rocks, trees, blue clear sky, silence and dry heat -- welcome to San Jacinto. Even at this elevation it was 88 degrees F.

San Jacinto

Just in case you were doubting the size of these rocks -- they are massive!

The shade was very sparse on this part of the trail

How big do you think this rock is?

Did you guess right? By the way we turned around few minutes later ...

There are some really tight spots where you have to scramble between the rocks -- not a big deal, unless you are wearing a 50 pound pack!

Scorching heat ...

Can you see a lizard there?

There he is!

Come on! Give me some food! (no we didn't)

Where's the exit -- get me out of here!

When we came down it was reaching 120 degrees down at the desert! It' a killer!

About This Image

View from the top of the Aerial Tramway (San Jacinto)

All we wanted was to reach Round Valley and test our hiking gear ...

It was 115 degrees F and our first time in the alpine territory of San Jacinto, we had absolutely no idea what to expect, what to pack and what to wear; so we brought everything but the kitchen sink with us. I was absolutely sure we were prepared for anything ... And we were ... for everything except carrying all that gear in 115 degree weather at 8500ft of elevation. Our intended target was to reach Round Valley - but we barely made it half way there and back. This was the hike where I learned the value of ultralight backpacking ...
