After experimenting with my hiking and photo gear for over two years I think I've finally found a workable solution to carry a pro-size camera such as Nikon D3 on a trail. When referring to trail I mean a trail where you have to be self-sufficient for at least 2-3 days even if you are only planing being there for a day.
Lightweight Hiking Setup

My current setup is Arcteryx Needle 45 with ThinkTank Digital Holster 40 attached to one side and Lens Changer 35 on the other.
Ultralight Hiking Setup

35mm f/2.0 D-AF has become my favorite hiking lens (mounted on Nikon D3). Most of the landscape pictures in this gallery were taken using the following ultralight hiking setup:
