Glacier Lake Trail Hike

Taking a ride across the bay with Dave Lyon from AshoreWaterTaxi.com.

We've made it across the bay and Dave is getting ready to pull out. We are meeting him in 6.5 hours ~ 4.5 miles from this drop-off point.

No one is around ...

Getting ready to take the trail ...

One last look around before we are off to our hike to the Glacier Lake Trail.

Here's the trailhead.

Trail register box.

On the roll ...

Wow! All that vegetation -- we are not used to that coming from California where we mostly spend our time hiking the Alpine region of San Gorgonio.

Trail indicators ... all chewed up!

And here's the firs bear scat :)

And the second bear scat.

Trail ...

Another trail sign. This trail was a bit confusing and I still don't understand how it related to the map. I wish I had my GPS then, in fact this is the trail that made me get one!

Bush plane ...

Getting closer ...

This part of the trail got very rocky -- the Glacier definitely went though here at some point leaving moraine behind.

First glimpse of the Grewingk Glacier

Mosquito shelter :)

Mosquito shelter almost up ...

At last :)

What a view! It's June by the way :)

Yep, snow, ice, fresh air and it's the end of June!

Closeup of Grewingk Glacier

It got pretty cold so we had to build a fire to warm up ...

Our quick "camp"

Another closeup of Grewingk Glacier

We are on our way to the pick-up point -- notice the trail is very different up here, it's steeper, more dense and there is a lot of bear scat!

Bam!

Bam!

Bam!

Look what we got here! Bear scratch marks, hmm ...

Bam!

This is where I smelled the Bear! There was absolutely no doubt he was there, behind the fallen tree!

Bam!

And yet another "scratch tree".

We are getting closer to the pickup point.

Trail marker

Bam!!

Oh yeah we are close now ...

I can smell the water ...

Interesting ...

And we are out now -- this is the stair down into the pickup point (Halibut Cove)

Halibut Cove (left)

Another shoot of Halibut Cove (left)

Waiting for pickup at Halibut Cove ...

Here's our ride -- thanks Dave!

On our way back to Homer's harbor.

we are back at the harbor (Homer Spit)

We decided to have a quick dinner at the Fire Spit Grill. Where Mike (the chef) made the best ribeye steak I've had in my life! I can't wait to get back there ...

And this is the view we had that night at our Cabin!

Unreal view!

Can you imagine this?!

Grewingk Glacier Trail Hike in Homer Alaska

We took a water taxi ride from Homer to Kachemak Bay state park to hike the Glacier Lake trail and then Saddle Trail. Grewingk Glacier is located in Kachemak Bay State Park & Wilderness Park near Homer Alaska. We learned about this amazing place from a guide book (Frommers).

To get to Kachemak Bay State you have to take a water taxi -- we went with Dave Lyon from AshoreWaterTaxi.com. I learned about Dave on Alaska Outdoors Directory Forums -- he is a great guy and told us more about Homer than the guide book!

If you are ever in Homer give Dave a call you will not be disappointed!
